LUSAKA INTEGRATED SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMPANY APPREHEND 17 ILLEGAL WHEELBARROW PUSHERS

The Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC) conducted an enforcement activity to curb indiscriminate disposal of solid waste by illegal waste collectors in Kamwala, Chilenje and Kanyama.

During the enforcement, the Inspectors managed to apprehend a total number of seventeen (17) wheelbarrow pushers and confiscated twenty-three (23) wheelbarrows in the respective areas.

The wheelbarrow pushers have been charged for illegal collection and indiscriminate disposal of waste at undesignated dump sites in the communities. The wheelbarrow pushers are in police custody waiting to appear before the Fast Track Court at Civic Center

Additionally, five (5) households inspected during the operations were found to be using illegal solid waste service providers such as wheelbarrow pushers. The households have been issued with charge notices for failure to subscribe to the established solid waste providers.

The LISWMC would like to urge all residents of Lusaka to desist from using illegal waste collectors as these contribute to indiscriminate disposal of solid waste in our communities. Instead, members of the public should use designated solid waste service providers.
