THE ORGANIZATION
The Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC) was established following the enactment of the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act No. 20 of 2018 as an autonomous Solid Waste Management Utility in order to provide effective solid waste management services in the City of Lusaka and has taken over solid waste management functions from the Lusaka City Council.
The Company is responsible for the following functions:
- Facilitate and provide solid waste services in order to ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment;
- Manage solid waste infrastructure in order to ensure sound treatment and disposal;
- Enforce solid waste standards in order to ensure compliance and enhance provision of quality services;
- Facilitate private sector participation in the development and provision of solid waste management in order to ensure accessible, sufficient and affordable services;
- Manage corporate affairs and consumer services in order to enhance smooth operations of the institution;
- Manage financial and other resources in order to ensure their prudent utilization and accountability; and
- Manage the provision of independent assurance on the institution’s risk management and governance in order to ensure the effectiveness of internal control systems.
In the quest to improve the solid waste management service provision in the city and provide the above listed services, LISWMC is looking for suitably qualified individuals to join the Company as Mechanical Technician Assistant (1) and Machine Operators (4) on Fixed Term Contracts to be based in Lusaka City.
JOB TITLE: MECHANICAL ASSISTANT – 01 POSITION
JOB PURPOSE
To maintain and repair heavy duty equipment in order to deliver maximum equipment availability for solid waste management while ensuring the highest safety level is maintained at all times.
REPORTS TO: Principal Waste Management Infrastructure Officer
RESPONSIBILITIES (Without Limitation)
- Responsible for the maintenance and well-being of the relevant earth moving equipment.
- Responsible for servicing and lubrication of the earth moving equipment in order to prevent wear and tear and detect defects.
- Record possible anomalies observed during maintenance or inspection of the equipment and report to the designated officer for action.
- Ensure that all tools, and equipment are correctly used and kept in good operating conditions in order to prevent theft, lose or damage to the tools.
- Carry out emergency repair works in order to reduce idle time of the equipment at the landfill.
- Promptly schedule major maintenance works on the equipment through the designated officer in order to prevent delays in having the equipment repaired.
- Develop and maintain a database for equipment historical data in order to monitor component life.
- Ensure proper safety measures are adhered to at all times by all personnel working on heavy duty equipment.
- Undertake timely the reporting of incidents or damages caused to the equipment.
REQUIREMENTS
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Diploma in heavy duty equipment repairs or equivalent.
- Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia
- At least two (2) years work experience in maintenance and repair of earth moving equipment.
- Able to communicate effectively in English

JOB TITLE: HEAVY DUTY MACHINE OPERATOR – 04 POSITIONS
JOB PURPOSE
To operate heavy duty earth moving equipment that is utilized in the spreading, covering and compacting of solid waste that is deposited into Chunga landfill. The heavy duty equipment include bull dozer, excavator, front end loader, and back hoe loader.
REPORTS TO: Waste Management and Infrastructure Officer
RESPONSIBILITIES (Without Limitation)
- Maintain efficient and safe operational status of the machine by conducting pre-start checks daily in order to ascertain its mechanical fitness for works
- Operate the machine in a manner that will not result in undue or unnecessary equipment breakdown.
- Report all defects on the Machine to the workshop/transport section
- Work on levelling and compacting solid waste at Chunga landfill and other related solid waste management duties
- Ensure good house keeping
- Follow instruction as given by the Supervisor
REQUIREMENTS
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate
- A Machine Operator’s Certificate of Competence
- Minimum of Class C License
- Basic mechanical knowledge about earth moving equipment is an added advantage
- Sound Knowledge of safe working procedures
- Ability to operate multiple equipment is an added advantage
- Good attitude for field work
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role
